King of Fighters is one of the stalwarts of fighting games, having been around nearly as long as Street Fighter. The latest title in the series, XV, was an impressive entry. Although, it might not have expanded the game’s audience compared to upcoming titles like Street Fighter 6. A free King of Fighters XV demo has just come out though which might open that audience up if only it hadn’t of come years into the game’s lifespan.
King of Fighters XV is getting a free demo for PlayStation, which is great since this is a real highlight in PS fighting games. It’s not a full version of the game. The new demo features a much bigger portion of the title and more than enough to lure in any fighting game players not yet sold on the title. There are going to be 15 different characters included in the King of Fighters XV demo. That includes some of the newcomers to the game.
The demo isn’t the entire title, but a decent spread of characters and stages. Players can take advantage of the offline versus mode and training areas that the game has. That’s great for basic matches and getting a feel for the character’s movesets.
The big question with the new King of Fighters XV demo though, is why now?
Why Now for a King of Fights XV Demo?
King of Fighters XV originally released back in February 2022. It’s had plenty of updates in that time, it’s getting DLC and more which has fleshed out the game considerably. So why add a demo now? That King of Fighters XV demo is uniquely put together. It doesn’t entirely feel like a trial version of the game.
With a more limited and basic roster, this feels like an arcade-style version of KoF. It’s stripped back to its basic roster and lacks the online functionality that some might expect. If you just want to try out the mechanics of KoF and potentially get to grips with some of the cast, this is a perfect way to do that.
Coming so long after release and so close to the Street Fighter 6 release date, this new demo might not pull too many brand-new fans to the franchise. If you’ve been on the fence about the title though, this is a perfect way to get a feel for KoF.
