It’s only day 3 but already, one of the giants of CS:GO will be heading home from IEM Rio. Teams in Group B may have dodged playing against NaVi but there are still a number of top teams competing and two of them are the FaZe Clan and Vitality CS:GO teams. Both of these teams have already faced losses early on in the tournament and it’s already come down to elimination day for one of them. The structure of the group stage means this was almost inevitable but for fans of FaZe and Vitality, it won’t be easy watching.
FaZe Clan at IEM Rio – A Surprising Turn of Events
Fresh off the heels of their victory in the ESL Pro League Season 17, it’s somewhat surprising to see FaZe CS:GO in this situation. They were off to a great start on day 1 with a huge 16 – 3 victory against 9z Team. However, it seems that they met their match in Furia Esports on both Mirage and Nuke.
Historically speaking, FaZe CS:GO should probably come out on top of this matchup today. Not only have they had a slew of successes in the recent months that has seen them place first in the ESL Pro League, BLAST Premier spring groups and even a 3rd – 4th place finish at Worlds in 2022.
Vitality CS:GO Journey Perhaps Not Over Yet
Things have been a touch disappointing in the Vitality CS:GO camp for a few months now, a theme they were certainly not hoping to continue at IEM Rio. While the results certainly haven’t been bad in recent months, they have fallen short of the top results. Their last showing in Rio last year was also something of a disappointment that ended in 12th – 14th place.
Until now, things have been going OK but not amazing. It was a little surprising that IEM Rio underdogs OG were able to knock them down in the very first round. It was a close call, with OG edging out the victory by just 2 rounds but a dub is a dub at the end of the day.
Previous Matchups – Not Easy to Call
Those looking to predict the outcome of this match before it even happens may have their work cut out for them. In the previous 6 games between FaZe Clan and Vitality, they have come out equal on both sides. FaZe have won 3 times and Vitality…also 3 times. Looking back at IEM Rio 2022, it must be said that Vitality took a very decisive victory in the best of one. Perhaps history is set to repeat itself.
