The Nintendo Switch has now sold 122.55 million units, surpassing the PlayStation 4 and Game Boy to become the third best selling video game console of all time.
The figure was revealed in Nintendo’s third quarter earnings report, which also announced that 994.30 million units of Switch software have now been sold.
Having passed 122.55 million units, the Switch now sits behind just the Nintendo DS at 154.02 million units sold and the PlayStation 2 at 159 million units sold.
Despite the impressive number, up eight million from November, Switch sales declined by 21.3% from 2021, when it sold 18.95 million units in the first three quarters compared to 2022’s 14.91 million units. 5.22 million of these were of the original Nintendo Switch, 7.69 million were the OLED Model, and 2 million were the Nintendo Switch Lite.
Nintendo admitted that the impact of semiconductor and other component shortages (that have plagued the hardware market for the last two years) were resolved for this holiday season, but noted that 2021 year saw the launch of the OLED Model which could be a reason for increased sales.
Nintendo’s earnings report also revealed that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have sold 18 million units, crossing into the Switch’s ten best selling games of all time.
