Blizzard plots the WoW Dragonflight roadmap for 2023 with new zones, updates, and a glimpse at the future

A month out from its latest expansion, the WoW Dragonflight roadmap for 2023 is clear thanks to an blog post from publisher Blizzard. In an end of year writing from Executive Producer Holly Longdale she extols on the need for the World of Warcraft team to continue improving upon a formula 18 years in the making. “In planning out the road ahead following the release of Dragonflight, we’ve been mindful of the duty we owe our players to nurture this living world and, frankly, the need to do better than we have at times in the recent past,” said Longdale.

The road ahead appears to be set thanks to the Dragonflight roadmap for 2023, seen below.

The WoW Dragonflight roadmap for 2023

One of the biggest knocks against past updates and releases post-expansion in WoW was the lack of diversity in content. If a player already completed the main story and hit max level there isn’t much else left to do. The 2023 roadmap promises a refresh of old systems, creation of emerging content, and the typical big, tentpole updates that are common post-expansion.

The first one coming in early 2023 includes the much lauded Trading Post feature, giving players the ability to earn rare transmogs, mounts, and pets each month in a type of free battle pass.

“We recently announced the upcoming 10.0.5 content update, which should go live early next year, bringing with it the Trading Post system which allows players of all playstyles to earn a wide range of fun cosmetic rewards of their choice,” said Longdale.

A look into the future

The most intriguing part of the blog post comes in the form of revealing information on the next expansion. At some point in 2023 players will return to the Dracthyr starting area of the Forbidden Reach. This will reveal the future for the Evoker class, and maybe even for World of Warcraft itself. “This content will set up the next major chapter of Dragonflight, and by its conclusion, it should be obvious what our next destination must be,” she said. Curious. Consider us intrigued.

Obviously, this change in being forthwrite with information is welcome and a joy to see. Although the last few years of expansion for World of Warcraft have not seen the game at its best. With stiff competition in the MMORPG front the time is now for Blizzard to start trying new things.

Let’s see if they keep their promises with the WoW Dragonflight roadmap in 2023.
