Activision Blizzard COO leaves for the Metaverse

As 2023 draws to a close new news has been published showing that Activision COO, Daniel Alegre has taken the leap into Web3! He has done so at a pivotal time in the Web3 timeline as he takes over as CEO of Yuga Labs from the predecessor Nicole Muniz.

Activision Blizzard are the team behind Call Of Duty esports and World of Warcraft making this career change a monumental one. It is great to see the transition both individuals and companies are making into the world of Web3.

Yuga Labs are the brains behind the popular NFT collection Bored Ape Yacht Club that is currently the 7th most popular project on Opensea.io, the Ethereum NFT marketplace. 194 ETH has been traded in total volume and has seen an 84% increase in price since its inception!

A New Opportunity

Alegre is looking to “pursue a new opportunity.” in joining Yuga Labs, with his contract set to start in the first quarter of 2023. Having a figure like this make the transition to the blockchain is a great accomplishment, which may spur further progression for the gaming sector with his expertise and experience.

Yuga Labs has seen great success, following on from their NFT collection they managed to release a crypto currency (Bored Ape Coin) and received considerable funding. The funding came from Andreesen Horowitz totalling at $450 million. Andreesen have also lended their hand to Sky Mavis (Axie Infinity review), Roblox and Lootrush to name a few.

“Since exploding onto the scene with Bored Ape Yacht Club in 2021, Yuga Labs has quickly made a name for itself through a powerful combination of storytelling and community-building. The company’s pipeline of products, partnerships, and IP represents a massive opportunity to define the metaverse in a way that empowers creators and provides users with true ownership of their identity and digital assets.” – Daniel Alegre

Activision have been at the forefront of scandals as reported on by Forbes. Their CEO was aware of sexual harrassment claims that were running rampant amongst the company, turning a blind eye to it. Moving away from this company may be the move Alegre needed to move on with his career.

Yuga Labs co-founder, Wylie Aronow is excited about the move and had these words to say:

“We are thrilled to have him join the team to help with our vision of a truly interoperable metaverse. Daniel has held one of the highest level roles at one of the largest gaming companies in the world. He brings valuable experience across entertainment, e-commerce, and global strategic partnerships — all of which are critical aspects of an immersive web3 world built by creators and for creators.”

Alegre is already pledging his allegiance to the Bored Ape Yacht Club via Twitter, sharing his NFT avatar on the site.

“Thank you to so many for the very kind messages and reception to today’s announce. I am excited to join the @boredapeyc with my new Ape. Discovering something new about my Mutant every second!”

Many will be sick of the sight of these wretched NFTs, however we’re all for it! NFTs whilst under mass scrutiny are a cool and unique entity amongst those who are in Web3 and this recent announcement is only just the beginning!

Seth Green, the creator of the Family Guy series is an unofficial advocate for BAYC, has gone ahead and launched his own intellectual property via their API.

Imagine if we all had a positive outlook like Daniel, the space would be a prosperous place for the advancement of the entertainment industry as we know it! Hopefully this ruffles a few feathers and gets less optimistic heads on Bored! (pun intended, sorry).
