Mitr0 retires from Fortnite: This is his legacy

A sad but expected announcement came through Twitter today via professional Fortnite player Dmitri “Mitr0” Van de Vrie. The veteran competitor revealed his retirement from Fortnite. Additionally, he has left Team Liquid—the esports organization he’s called home for nearly two years. It’s a sad day, as the original Season X trio of Mitr0, Benjy “Benjyfishy” Fish, and Kyle “Mongraal” Jackson have all retired from the game they dominated for a long time.

Mitr0’s decision seemed inevitable, given his lack of competitive drive for the last few seasons. Regardless, he leaves behind a legacy that every top player hopes to attain.

There was no heartfelt goodbye from Mitr0. He tweeted, “Quit @FNCompetitive.” Shortly before, Team Liquid announced Mitr0’s departure from the organization after joining in January 2020. Mitr0’s tweet has since amassed 35K likes. Most of those who reflected on the former Team Liquid member’s exit did so with sadness.

Mitr0’s long-time duo partner — Mongraal — tweeted a short video reminiscing about Chapter 2 Season 4. Mitr0, Mongraal, Tai “TaySon” Starčič claimed the Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) title in that season. As a result, the trio accomplished something only a handful of Fortnite players have. While that may have been Mitr0’s last significant placement, he spent two years dominating competitive Fortnite.

One of the best to ever touch Fortnite at its peak

It’s no secret that Fortnite stood atop the gaming world in 2018 and 2019. Fans and players across the globe were enamored with the game’s unique playstyle and building mechanic. However, very few could compare to Mitr0 in his prime. He exploded onto the scene with his impressive skills, and eventually parlayed that into tournament results

Mitr0 joined a select few who earned the right to compete in the early “Skirmish” tournament days. He did not squander those opportunities, winning Summer Skirmish week three, week five, and placing top-five in nearly every tournament he entered. From September 2019 to October 2019, Mitr0 won three consecutive competitions—two of which were Fall Skirmish events. Also, the famous Mitr0 Shockwave Grenade clip came about from the Fall Skirmish

It’s safe to say Mitr0 was the top Fortnite talent in Europe. Following the Fall Skirmish, Mitr0 targeted the Winter Royale as his next opportunity to prove himself. As a result, Mitr0 took third place in the Grand Finals, netting him $45K. The Danish player’s success beginning in 2018 granted him an invitation to the ESL Katowice Royale—one of Fortnite’s premiere LAN tournaments.

Mitr0’s experience at Katowice Royale resulted in a 16th and fifth-place finish in the Solo and Duo competitions. After teaming with Magin, K1nzell, and Khuna, Mitr0 connected with fellow rising star Mongraal ahead of the inaugural Fortnite World Cup.

Mongraal, Mitr0, and Benjyfishy: An era of Fortnite domination

Immediately, Mongraal and Mitr0 stunned the Fortnite scene with outstanding tournament placements. The two Euros won the Luxe Cup, finished third in the Fortnite World Cup Warmup, and qualified for the Fortnite World Cup Finals in their first week. Subsequently, Mitr0 and Mongraal were the favorites to win the entire event.

On July 27, 2019, Mongraal and Mitr0 played well at the Fortnite World Cup in front of millions worldwide. Ultimately, the two players settled for sixth, taking home $450K in total. Following the World Cup, Mongraal and Mitr0 needed a third teammate for the inaugural FNCS competition.

Season X marked the birth of Mongraal, Mitr0, and Benjyfishy—one of the scariest trios in Fortnite history. This team, dubbed MMB, won three of five qualifiers and finished second in the other two. Undoubtedly, this trifecta was favored to win the first-ever FNCS title. Unfortunately, this did not come to fruition. MMB took tenth overall due to problematic spawn fights in the Finals.

Mitr0’s Fortnitr career following Season X, eventual win in Chapter 2 Season 4

Mitr0 remained a top competitive Fortnite player beyond Season X. His notable placements included finishing 18th in the FNCS Invitational, but Chapter 2 Season 4 marked perhaps the highest point in Mitr0’s career. Alongside long-time teammate Mongraal and rising star TaySon, this dysfunctional team struck gold in the FNCS Chapter 2 Season 4 Finals.

The trio led on day one by 30 points after earning two Victory Royales. On day two, Mongraal, Mitr0, TaySon overcame a team contesting them, ultimately securing the Chapter 2 Season 4 Championship. Although they controlled Stark Industries, a notoriously overpowered location in that season, the win further validated Mitr0’s Fortnite career.

Mitr0 took a much-needed break from Fortnite after Chapter 2 Season 4 and sadly struggled to maintain his top form. He placed well here and there, but only qualified for one FNCS Finals after winning Season 4.

His last notable tournament occurred in Saudi Arabia at the Gamers8 LAN competition. Mitr0 teamed with fellow veteran Milan and took 37th out of 50 teams.

Fans of Mitr0 will remember his infamous Shockwave play, unrivaled aggression, rage moments, and of course, the Mitr0 classic for years to come. Unfortunately, Mitr0 did not clarify what’s next in his gaming career. He has not streamed on Twitch in a month, so perhaps he’ll pursue Valorant, similar to Fortnite legend Benjyfishy. Either way, Mitr0 has left an everlasting mark in Fortnite history.
